What is Compass’s approach to accessibility?

We want everyone to be able to read our buying guides. Compass aims to follow the WCAG 2.1 AA guidance, which is a widely used set of recommendations for making web content easier to use. To be straightforward about it: the site has not been formally audited, so we do not claim that it conforms to the standard.

What do you do to make pages easier to use?

The Compass Editorial Team tries to build each page with a few basics in mind:

  • readable text with sensible line lengths and clear headings
  • alt text on images so screen readers can describe them
  • pages that work with a keyboard and don’t require a mouse
  • link text that says where the link goes, rather than “click here”
  • enough contrast between text and background

These are goals we work toward, and we won’t always get every page right.

Where are the limits?

Some things are outside our control. Product links take you to store pages that belong to other companies, and we can’t change how those pages are built. Any embedded content from other providers works the same way. If one of those is hard to use, the store or provider is the one that can fix it.

How do I report a barrier?

If something on Compass is hard to read, hard to navigate or doesn’t work with the tools you rely on, email contact@compass-om.com. Tell us the page address, what went wrong and, if you are comfortable sharing it, the browser or assistive technology you were using. That detail makes the problem much easier to track down.

We take these reports seriously and will look at each one. You can also reach us through the Contact Us page.
