Does Compass take copyright seriously?
Yes. Compass respects copyright, and we want the material on the site to be ours to publish. If you are a rights holder and think something on Compass uses your work without permission, you can ask us to remove it under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
How do I submit a takedown notice?
Send it by email to legal@compass-om.com. A notice needs these parts to be complete:
- identification of the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed
- the URL on Compass where the material can be found
- your contact details, such as a name and an email address
- a statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the owner, its agent or the law
- a statement that the information in your notice is accurate, made under penalty of perjury, and that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner
- your physical or electronic signature
Compass has no registered DMCA agent and no postal address to offer, so email is how we receive notices.
What do you do with a valid notice?
The Compass Editorial Team reads it and checks that it is complete. If it is, and the claim looks legitimate, we take down the material or disable access to it. We may also tell the person who supplied the content that a notice was received and share its details with them.
What if I think the removal was a mistake?
You may send a counter-notice to the same address. Include the material that was removed and where it was located, a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe the removal was a mistake or misidentification, your name, contact information and signature, and your consent to the jurisdiction of United States courts. We may forward counter-notices to the original complainant.
What happens to repeat infringers?
People who repeatedly infringe copyright aren’t welcome as sources of content on Compass, and we may stop publishing their material altogether when it is appropriate.
Our general rules for using the site are in the Terms of Service.
