Who is behind Compass, and how do I reach them?

Compass publishes practical buying guides. The site is operated from the United States by the Compass Editorial Team. Anything about privacy can go to privacy@compass-om.com.

What information does the site collect?

Not much, because there isn’t much to collect. Compass has no user accounts, no paid memberships and no newsletter, and comments are switched off everywhere. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to buy. The only information we handle comes from two sources:

  • Server logs. The company that hosts the site keeps standard logs showing visitors’ IP addresses, browser types and the pages requested.
  • Messages you send us. If you submit the contact form, the message is emailed to the editorial inbox.

We also look at Google Search Console to understand how Compass appears in Google Search results. It doesn’t put cookies on your browser. Beyond that, the site does not run its own analytics and does not display ads right now.

What is the information used for, and how long is it kept?

Logs exist so the host can protect the site and track down technical problems. Contact messages are read so we can reply. We keep each kind of information for as long as it is reasonably useful for that purpose. We haven’t set a published retention period, and we don’t use form data for anything else.

What about cookies?

Compass doesn’t currently set analytics cookies itself. Affiliate links are different: if you click one, the store or network on the other end may place its own cookie to record that you came from us. We don’t control those cookies.

How do affiliate links and outside sites fit in?

Our guides link to Amazon through affiliate links, and Amazon has its own privacy policy that applies once you leave Compass. Other external sites we link to have their own policies as well. We don’t control how those sites handle data, so please read their policies if you are concerned. The Affiliate Disclosure explains the commission arrangement.

Is Compass for children?

No. The site isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child has sent us something, let us know at privacy@compass-om.com and we will delete it.

What choices do I have?

You can ask us what personal information we have about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or raise any concern. Residents of some U.S. states have specific privacy rights under state law, and we will respond to access and deletion requests in that spirit. Send them to privacy@compass-om.com. You can also block or clear cookies in your browser, and the site will keep working.

How is data kept safe?

We keep our data footprint small and rely on the web host’s security measures. Still, nothing online is perfectly secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute protection.

Could this policy change?

Yes. If what we do changes, we will revise this page and update the date at the top. See also the Terms of Service, and use the Contact Us page for anything else.
